Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the massive storm caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of residents across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones stronger and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Researchers have found that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events cause approximately millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency last week due to the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
