Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several access tunnels leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our safety, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
