Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
